About

Wow I cant believe they still have this, THE ORIGINAL FTM WEBSITE 1996 Archived by the WAYBACK MACHINE. Awesome MIDI file plays too!

Heres the text:

In 1996, a small group of dedicated mountain bikers got sick and tired of the mamby pamby techno weenie mountain bike club they were members of. These brave pioneers formed the Fat Tire Militia.

Militia members took the initiative outside of political correctness to prevent trail closings, and develop new areas to ride. Sometimes this means riding closed trails. Sometimes cutting new trails. Whatever it takes to get the job done. Through sales of T-Shirts and chainsaw silencers they have been able to accomplish their mission objectives.

Lead by the likes of Machette Rick (trail blazer) and founder of the Militia Trail our numbers have grown, as well as the support of our local community.

The map you see is the result of our first campaign (click on map to download detailed printable version).

Well…Border Town’s Tuesday night mountain rides are back and they started with a wild ride hosted by “Big Ring” Bob from Fraconia. Mike loaded up the BT van with several local brave souls. Dave, Tony, Chris and Rob joined Mike in what could be argued as an adventure in itself…the van ride to Fraconia. Big Ring and Tuck met us at Kelly’s Variety Store parking lot. Geared up…we headed down the road and into the woods….. After a short climb on some cross country ski trails we entered onto some “easy” single track. “Easy” depends on your perspective…. If your “Big Ring” and have ridden the trail 1000 times….then…yep its easy! This single track turned out to be some very technical stuff! It was a hoot! It took an hour and 45 min to go a little over 2 miles! Not alot of up and down but alot of “rachetting”, bouncing off rocks and trees! Attempts to make it over Volkswagen rock provided some laughs. The biggest digger we witnessed was at the end when we were all debating whether to go off a headwall. After some internal debating…..off we went….except Chris…..hehehe…..when he went off the headwall everything went fine until he got to the bottom…and wham! He launched over the handle bars….he was a good 7 feet in the air when he was completing his 1 1/2 gainer before crashing to the pine needle covered ground….whammm! Hoaaaa! Knocked the wind right out of him and re-injuring a hamstring….We blamed it on the fact it had gotten dark already…thats our story and we’re sticking to it.

The Original Boarder Town Website
Oh yea and back then being one of the first local business to be on the World Wide Web and having some real fun with it, the local newspaper The Conway Daily Sun, threatened the owner with bad press if he didnt clean up the few “swear words” on his sight, thus the CENSORED page.
